3D Laser Scanning for Glass

Get Usable 3D Revit models that Save Time, Reduce Design Clashes and increase Quality

Architectural drawings are not always an ideal solution when the human factor acts in the production of structures and you need to design parts that are ideal in geometry and dimensions for an already finished structure that does not perfectly match the drawings.

In a year 2018 we scanned canopies at McKenzie Tower in Seattle, WA. Welding construction was already done and according a scan data checking it wasn’t ideally perfect. As you understand produce 40 different glass panels using architectural drawing was a big mistake for money and time spending. Our client decided to order long-range scanning services at our company because we had big experience in scanning and modeling for large objects before.

The Leica RTC360 scanner fit perfectly for this job and we used it to capture data. Using that 3D scanner our scanning technician was able to get very precisely point cloud data at the shortest timelines.

Our company designers and engineers transformed 3D scan STL file into CAD model using Geomagic Design X and we got canopies metal frames in 3D for building perfect glass panels on it.

SolidWorks software we used for building optimized glass panels, create manufacturing drawings and exporting DXF contours for glass cutting machine programming.

The initial result of the scanning is a point cloud and additional work is required to generate a CAD result. 3D models in common CAD formats can be provided, as well as 2D drawings or sections.

The CAD results can be a significant budget consideration, perhaps equaling or exceeding the cost for the scanning. Therefore, a requirement for CAD should be considered and built into the budget simultaneously with any scanning requirement.

    The total cost scan a theater space and provide results can be unique to the theater and the deliverable format required. RFQs for scanning should provide complete info about the space including photos of existing conditions, as well as elevation and plan drawings with approximate dimensions. Specific requirements for CAD should be identified on the RFQ as well.
