Fixture Inspection Using 3D Scanning

3D inspection services

Hard-to-measure fixture scanned by Arrival 3D

We were contracted by a manufacturer of large power plant duct equipment to inspect a fixutre they use for quality checking their finished product before delivering to the customer. Because their parts connect directly to the turbine, the tolerances for a hole pattern needed to be within +/- .020″.  We used our 12′ Faro Scanarm to scan and probe the hole pattern and compare it to their CAD drawing.

This particularly large and odd-shaped ring had a bunch of holes on it, we are talking about 50 . To measure all of those hole locations with a tape measure or other manual measuring tool would be quite difficult. But using a touch probe on the Faro arm, we were able to probe the hole locations with relative ease. We also scanned the holes with the 3D laser scanner for additional confidence in their position.

This is a good example of 3D scanning services being brought to the customer. This particular part would have been incredibly difficult to transport. It was hard enough to manipulate it around the shop considering its awkward size and no real good place to pick it up. Fortunately our 3D laser scanning tripod was able to fit right in the middle, and the long reach of the 12-ft Faro arm was plenty to get the job done.
