4D Printing

flexible 3D printing

Just when we were getting comfortable with 3D printing, 4D printing has emerged over the past few years. Scientists at MIT are using a new technique that could print responsive objects—from water pipes to sneakers—that adapt to their surroundings on their own. 4D printing combines the process of 3D printing with programable matter. According to the Self-Assembly Lab, “Potential applications include; robotics-like behavior without the reliance on complex electro-mechanical devices as well as adaptive products, garments or mechanisms that respond to user-demands and fluctuating environments.”

4D printing will change the way we interact with our world. Watch TED Fellow Skylar Tibbits explain this topic further.
