Capturing details with more precision and accuracy
For a few years, we have been working on preserving historical objects for future generations. Many researchers believe one of the best ways to do this is by creating digital copies for our kids to use. This method of preservations is a relatively new but effective one. Museums were slow to adopt 3D laser scanning, to begin with. Still, as soon as they saw the benefits and uses of this technology, it has been rapidly growing.
Typically, museums would use 3D laser scanning to revitalize an older piece, fill in the holes, preserve it, or make copies of small parts. However, recently GeoSLAM sent out a specialist who took their 3D laser scanning and could scan the world’s most giant dinosaur. This technology is incredible because it can scan massive objects even though it comes as a handheld device.
This dinosaur weighs 65 tons and is 85 feet in height. Usually, it would take days to take the pictures necessary to create a digital copy. However, with a 3D laser scanning device, it took much less time. This dinosaur cost over $1 million to construct and is one of Alberta Canada’s biggest attractions that are now digitally preserved.
How 3D laser scanning works
The coolest thing about 3D laser scanning is that even though it is a smaller object, it can capture massive pieces. This device takes rapid pictures sometimes thousands per second, all a person must do is hold it and walk around an object. It uses a laser beam to capture cloud points. It measures how long the light travels from the object to the machine.
The pictures capture the surface area from every direction, it is not pixelated and can be seen in detail. The laser measures the dimensions, pick up any holes, and gives the images a more complete look with measurements. This is one of the most advanced tools on the market and has been adopted in many areas.
Who else can use 3D laser scanning
This technology is fantastic because it is no longer only for researchers; it has popped up in many different fields. Companies worldwide have realized 3D laser scanning’s uses and have adopted it in their studies and works.
Fashion designers- One of the best ways to stay relevant in the fashion world is by adopting the latest tools and looks. 3D laser scanning allows a designer to create custom-fit clothes that are sustainable.
Professors- These teachers understand that not everyone worldwide will have access to the same tools to learn. 3D laser scanning allows them to share their knowledge quickly and safely. If a medical student cannot practice on a body, a professor can acquire a 3D model.
Construction- Teams worldwide are using this equipment to analyze a place before sending their team in. 3D laser scanning is helping create safer work environments.
Doctors- There are now giant 3D laser scanning devices that can scan someone’s body; this allows them to see deeper in someone and locate any problems.
Final thoughts
3D laser scanning has helped digitally preserve a giant dinosaur, but it has done much more than that. It is continuously helping us be safer and create safer work environments. We can share information with each other and save that information for the next generation. Who knows what 3D laser scanning will bring us next?
