Frequently asked questions about 3D laser Scanning:

If you have never utilized 3D laser scanning services, that is not a problem. Many of our customers are first-timers. For your convenience, we have compiled a list of questions that often get asked:

Can you scan parts as big as ______?

The answer to this question is nearly always yes. We have different types of scanners that can capture a wide range of sizes. Once we understand what you are trying to accomplish, we can make sure the scanning technology used is sufficient for your requirements.

What is the accuracy of 3d laser scanning services?

The accuracy of our 3D scanners themselves start at .001″ and go up from there, depending on the technology and the size of the object or area scanned. But this number usually only applies for a single scan under ideal conditions. for this reason, the question of expected accuracy is best answered once we have a clear understanding of the project.

How much do 3D laser scanning services cost?

3D Scanning projects are usually broken into two parts: 1) the scanning itself, and 2) turning the scan into the desired output type. The cost of scanning starts at $100 for a simple part. For on-site area scanning, costs start at $1,500/day (or less depending on location). The second part, turning your scan into the desired output format such as a CAD file, varies from part to part and the type of output file needed.

How long does the process take?

Small projects can usually be turned around in a week or less. If CAD modeling is involved, projects can take longer depending on complexity.

What areas in the USA you do serve?

We scan across the entire United States and can travel to your location. If you in an area near one of our scanning facilities, we may be able to perform the scanning with little to no travel costs. These areas include the states of Oklahoma, California, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Boston, Oregon and Washington. Our “home” cities include Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Wichita, Fayetteville, New Orleans, Shreveport, Kansas City, Little Rock, and hundreds of smaller cities in-between.

How does a 3D scanner work?

A 3D laser scanning equipment used to scan a building will be a tripod mounted instrument that transmits pulses of laser light through a spinning mirror. Scanners used for parts usually project a light pattern or laser line and have cameras that observe the projected light to acquire the 3D shapes.

Can I scan something for 3D printing?

Yes. We can convert 3D scans into 3D-printer friendly models. We can also take care of the 3D printing for you using 3D printing services, or we are happy to just provide the 3D file if you prefer to handle that part yourself.

What types of output files can be obtained?

Many standard 3D files can be produced including Solidworks, STL for 3D printing, AutoCAD, STEP, IGES, XYZ, ReCap and many more. Here is a more extensive list of the file formats you can get from 3D scanning services.

Will 3D Scanning damage my part?

No. 3D Laser scanning is a non-contact technique. For highly reflective parts, we may coat the part with a light talcum powder which is easliy removed.

    Are 3D scanning services safe?

Our on-site laser scanning process uses eye-safe instruments in most cases. For flammable environments we use an explosion-proof scanner. 3D scanning promotes safety because it permits you to take measurements from a safe distance from your plant hazards.

What types of 3D scanners do you use? Are they for sale?

We use some of the best 3D scanners available. We are resellers for a great structured light scanner made by Evatronix.

Can I do the scanning myself?

DIY 3D scanning may be an option for you. Scans can be captured using a simple camera in a process called photogrammetry. 3D scanning DIY kits can also be bought on ebay for under $200. It is probably not going to be as accurate as a professional scanner, but If you have the time and patience, you can do DIY 3D scanning for free.

    Do you rent 3D scanners?

Renting a professional quality scanner can be a smart choice for some. For example, a Faro Focus 3D rental or an Artec Eva scanner rental can cost around $600 a day. If you do rent a scanner, we can support you with software processing such as 3D model creation.
