Prosthetics for Animals Using 3D Laser Scanning

Improving the quality of life for all animals

3D laser scanning has changed our lives forever, it has entered our world at full force and helped us create amazing things that we use every day. Entire companies have adopted the technology and have been using it to run their businesses for a while. Other companies are dedicated to creating the best versions of this technology, creating a competitive market. 3D laser scanning has become a booming industry and will continue to grow as we find more uses for it.

Two companies have joined together to work on the goal of making prosthetics for animals. A New Jersey based 3D design firm DiveDesign has partnered with Bionic Pets. This company is one of the leading companies that genuinely care about changing an animal’s life by giving them custom made prosthetics to help the animals live their lives. Bionic Pets has helped over 25,000 animals and continues to expand that number with the help of DiveDesign.

Bionic Pets was founded by Derrick Campana, who originally created prosthetics for humans in 2002. Four years later, he created a company that focused on animals, and it has been a hit since then. His first animal prosthetic was built in 2004. Changing animals’ lives was his passion, and an entire team came together to make this business a success.

“Since the founding of the company, Bionic Pets has helped over 25,000 animals, and we’re just getting started. It is our mission to revolutionize rehabilitation and pain management in the animal world.” From the  Bionic Pets website.

The original process used to make animal prosthetics

Bionic Pets focuses on many different breeds of animals, not just dogs or cats. They would work on elephants, ducks, or other types of birds in need. However, dogs are one of the most popular animals they work on. They do try to focus on any animal who has lost a limb from any injuries or other chronic conditions. They are truly out to make a difference.

The process initially took more than 15 hours of human interaction to make a prosthetic by hand. They would have to cast a mold of the animal’s limb, pouring the material over the dog’s leg, shaping it, casting it, sanding it, and more. It took many hours of dedication and hard work; because of this, the company was not able to take on as many animals as they wanted and had to turn a lot of them away.

Thanks to 3D laser scanning and printing, most of the work time has been cut in half! They can noninvasively gather all details of an animal’s leg. Gathering information like dimensions, size, and length. With that information, they can make a prosthetic overnight that is custom to the animal in need.

Final thoughts

DiveDesign could not have picked a better company to partner with. These companies are genuinely changing animal’s lives for the better, helping them create a standard of living that all living creatures deserve. 3D laser scanning has changed the way we create and make things and had made it easier for others to help those in need. It takes out the long hours, so they can help more animals than one at a time. This technology has paved the way for a better future.
