augmented reality

What is augmented realitY?

Augmented reality (AR) layers a computer generated image on top of the users real system, creating a composite image. Many of these systems are 3D, but the others just provide additional sensory information you don’t normally have at your disposal. Some systems are sophisticated enough to provide including senses such as auditory, haptic, and olfactory. AR is also regarded as a “mix reality” or “computer mediated” reality.

Augmented reality can help solve problems like these:

  • Create virtual representations of products.
  • Provide real-time, step-by-step instructions.
  • Virtually train employees risk free.
  • Market over-sized or heavy products.
  • Enhance way-finding in your facility by creating AR navigation.
  • Create interactive marketing content.

uses for augmented reality

Gaming — Perhaps best known for its applications in the gaming industry, AR has certainly enhanced entertainment.

Medical — Augmented reality has been especially valuable to healthcare professionals, especially nurses and surgeons

Military — Soldiers have found AR helmets and programs to be valuable training tools to help prepare for combat.

Maintenance and Repair — Mechanics and technician crews can learn how to disassemble and reassemble parts and machinery using a superimposed images.

Marketing — From cosmetics to furniture, companies are starting to use AR for advertising purposes.

Education — Some lucky students now get to learn using AR technology.

Food Service — Restaurants, like KFC, are starting to train their employees how to fry chicken and prepare other kinds of foods through AR.

Pros of AR tech

Explore the world from your couch. There’s no shame in being a homebody. You can “see” the world from the comfort of your own home.

Training and planning. AR allows for safe, risk-free training before you do experience the real scenario. Feel free to make mistakes!

Immediate Feedback. You’ll get accurate feedback on your skills and performance as soon as the simulation is over. If you’re training how to safely operate a weapon like a gun, the program can measure your reaction time.

Cons of AR tech

Invasive of privacy. Just like most technology, the data stored in AR systems may be at risk to hacking.

Missing in action. It’s easy to get sucked into the world of your dreams, but it’s important to remember that it can’t replace the need for human interaction or healthy communication skills.
