Precision 3D Scanning for Granule System Documentation

Project Highlights

Project Name:

Granule System Documentation

Location:

Waco, Texas

Objective:

Capture precise 3D scans for facility upgrades, safety compliance, and automation

Project Size:

 10,000 Sq.Ft.

LOD:

350

Category:

Industrial

Technology Used:

Leica RTC360, TruView Virtual, Autodesk Revit

Project Overview

The project demanded scanning of the Granule System facility located in Waco, Texas. The realistic as-built model was created next through point cloud modeling procedures to assist maintenance and refurbishment operations. The project implemented the most recent scan of the BIM technology stack for achieving precise data collection and BIM model transition.

Client Overview

A Texas-based modification driveway manufacturer specializing in roof products and waterproof membranes for building slopes produced the modified bitumen and waterproofing membranes for low and steep roofs. The main priority of this facility was to develop precise facility documentation, which would enhance production and maintenance procedures.

Project Highlights

  • The technology used Leica RTC360 and BIM software.
  • Scanned the interior granule system to create an accurate point cloud-based model.
  • Deliverables are point cloud data, Revit model (.STP file), and true-color panoramic images.
  • Modeled architectural/structural at LOD 200
  • Granule system and equipment modeled at LOD 300.

Process & Execution

Scanning Points & 3D Laser Scanning

The team chose specific points for proper laser scanning views that allowed access to the entire granule system area.

We implemented the Leica RTC360 as our 3D laser scanning tool to acquire both highly detailed scans and precise point cloud data in addition to HDR photography functions.

Data Processing &
BIM Modeling

The processed scanned data underwent operations using Leica Cyclone software as a subsequent step.

Autodesk Revit received the point cloud input for constructing a detailed as-built 3D model.

Deliverables

The final model was received. STP file format to serve as a functional tool for renovation planning along with facilities management purposes.
