Recently a study done by Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne by Swiss researchers produced crack-free bulk metallic glass that could be used for jewelry. It’s the first time additive manufacturing has been used in such a way. It combines 3D laser scanning services and 3D printing to make a high-density amorphous glass. This glass is also called BMG and is strong, hard, and super flexible, making it great for manufacturing use. 

3D printing this glass is not easy, but the military has been studying how to create this glass for military and space use. By using the 3D printer, these researchers created glass with a density of 99.6%. In addition, using a printer allowed them to overcome the flaws and limitations of other glass. 

How does 3D laser scanning work?

How 3D printing works

Once a 3D laser scanning device captures all of the necessary information synced to a partnering program. This software is called computer-aided design and is the essential next step. It’s where a researcher will plug in more information making it more accurate than a 2D image. 

A 3D printer will be connected to this software, and it will read the information like coordinates. It will then use an arm to move in different directions and project hot liquid material that will harden correctly. Most of the time, there is no need to watch the progress of the item being created, but there are times where a researcher will have to watch closely to ensure it is working correctly.
