3D Scanning in the Palm of Your Hand

When we think of 3D technologies, we typically think of the larger 3D laser scanners and arms that can deliver highly accurate point cloud data. But over just the past few years, the advancement of 3D scanning now allows for 3D scanning in the palm of your hand. Introducing Sony’s new Xperia XZ1. The new first of its kind smartphone with built in 3D scanning technology.Sony isn’t typically the first company when you think of smartphones but they have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to their cameras and they produce almost half of the worlds smartphone sensors. The cameras and sensors in the new Xperia XZ1 will be some of the most advanced that they have produced to date and will make their phone stand out in one of the most saturated marketplaces. With a user friendly interface, anyone can use the 3D scanning software tools and is as easy as using a regular smartphone camera. Another facet of this is that there is no cloud based server necessary for processing. Everything is processed in the built in system.

Scanning and Mobile Creativity

With their 3D Creator app Sony offers 4 different scanning modes; head, face, food, & freeform. Just point and capture. Once the scan is complete, you can share them with friends and family through integrated connection to messaging apps and can be uploaded to Sketchfab for full rotational view and storage. They can be used as personalized avatars, and even sent to a 3D printed for production.Sony now brings 3D scanning services to the palm of your hand without any 3rd party software and directly on the phone itself. Although the feature has its limitations, its power and simplicity is the best example of how 3D scanning technologies are becoming more and more integrated into the lives of the everyday customer.
