12th Century Historic Site Reopens Thanks to 3D Laser Scanning services

AlUla Old Town Restored, Welcomes Visitors

Closed down in 2017 for restoration projects, AlUla Old Town finally reopened and welcomed new visitors. This is one of three remaining Islamic villages in the world. The restoration projects had to be done with care because this town was built in the 12th century and had people living there until 1980 when the rest moved for modern houses. The team of researchers was able to do this using 3D laser scanning services

The plans were to restore this old town so future generations could enjoy and learn front the rich culture in the local environment. The team that worked on this project restored two mosques, two streets, and a few homes.

“AlUla Old Town is an important chapter in AlUla’s journey through time. The site is key to the understanding, continuity, and evolution of the historic routes for trade and pilgrimage that made AlUla such a significant destination until the 20th century as it is for visitors again today,” said Phillip Jones, Chief Destination Management and Marketing Officer.

3D laser scanning services are the ultimate tool for restoration projects for many reasons. It creates a way for us to save our physical sites and create a digital replica of them. However, many more restoration projects may be needed in the future to keep the physical town open.

Why 3D laser scanning is good for restoration projects

There are reasons that this cutting-edge technology is chosen over others. It has some amazing benefits that are super hard to find elsewhere.

Noninvasive

3D laser scanning services either uses pictures or lasers to pick out information from a scene or object. Both forms are noninvasive and can keep physical objects totally untouched.

Fast

This is a faster way to collect information, and a small object can be done in a few moments. A city could be done in a few months to a year, much faster than the average time.

Precise

3D laser scanning services are much more accurate than doing anything by hand. It can capture every detail from texture, color, dimensions, looks, and any special features.

Digitally preserves information

On top of giving everyone the option to preserve something physically, it also allows a user to preserve the same copy digitally. One of the coolest things about 3D laser scanning services is all of the information can be turned into virtual reality. This allows people all over the world to walk through historical sites.

There are many more reasons why historical researchers love this technology though not everyone is on board yet. It will take time for more people to adopt this technology.

Final thoughts

3D laser scanning services are shaping how we preserve history. We are seeing more people use this tool for the amazing features it has. We will also be seeing a rise in virtual reality and online tours that are more accurate than ever before. Soon enough, everything will be preserved as a digital copy to save for our future children, and it is all with the help of 3D laser scanning services.
