The experts have spent countless hours looking into robots’ mobility perception and dexterity before delving into creating Spot. The dancing robot showcases the way mobile manipulation is growing and the endless sphere of robotic opportunities.
Spot, a four-legged mobile gadget, weighs 60lb. The entire design allows it to go anywhere humans go. It can easily adapt to any different task. You can use it to enhance data gatherings such as thermal imaging, 3D laser scanning services, or LiDAR for digital twin creation.
Through the inbuilt sensors, Spot can navigate through the different functions. You can integrate the platform in industries with a thermal camera, Spot CAM, Spot CORE I/O, and a Spot GXP.
Given that Spot can move around, there is no need to have a fixed location. There is no longer singularity in business. Therefore, businesses tend to think differently about robotics functionality. Boston Dynamics tries to realize the different mining, manufacturing, power, and oil and gas applications. The company is trying to expand its uses into maintenance, thermal detection, 3D scanning of facilities, and inspections.

Boston Dynamics consulted with Rightpoint to establish the user experience of Spot. With the Chicago-based IT company, the team was able to reconceptualize, redesign, and redevelop the AI to make it more effective. They used telemanipulation to develop cloud-based software by Boston Dynamics called Scout.
High Fidelity Experience
The core functionality of Spot is reliant on its image processing. The major area of development was converting the sensor data into a user-friendly control experience. It was also key to repositioning the cameras on the AI. Johnson insisted that the 3D scanning feature is needed to improve image processing.
Today, Tomorrow, and Future Ambitions in 3D Laser Scanning Services
At IMTS 2022, Spot put on a great show for its attendees. The vice president of marketing at Boston Dynamics, Eric Foellmer, showcased a video re-enacting New York City’s Easter Parade in 1900. Then, through a 3D laser scan, you could get the real essence of the event from the footage.
Boston Dynamics wants to explore further 3D scanning services and robotics in addition to Spot. They are looking into Stretch, a commercial robot that can load and unload packages. There is also Atlas, a robot with a hydraulic power unit.
To propel the research further, Hyundai and Boston Dynamics have invested $400 million to establish Boston Dynamics AI Institute in the Kendall Square research community. The institute will focus on organic hardware design, cognitive AI, athletic AI, and ethics and policy.
