Sony’s Xperia XZ1: 3D Scanning in the Palm of Your Hand

November 2, 2017

When you think of 3D scanning services, you typically think about larger scanners units and arms. But with the advancement of 3D scanning technologies within just the past few years, 3D scanning capabilities are now in the palm of your hand. Introducing Sony’s new and first of its kind Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 compact smartphone with integrated 3D scanning technology. Sony isn’t the first company that you think of when it comes to smartphones. But they have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to camera and sensor technology. The Xperia XZ1 will have some of the most advanced camera and sensor systems Sony has released to date. The technology and its features are sure to capture a lot of interest in an already heavily saturated smartphone market.

Scanning & Mobile Creativity

Their 3D Creator app makes this feature easy to use by anyone. Scanning is as easy as capturing a regular photo on a regular smartphone. Just point and click. Another important feature is that 3D scanning does not need a cloud based service for processing. Everything is done directly on the phones interface. The 3D Creator app has 4 scanning settings; head, face, food & freeform. Each scan is about 2MB and can easily be shared with friend and family as well as on integrated messaging apps and communities, even gaming avatars. Scans can also be sent directly to a 3D printer for production.
Sonny brings 3D scanning into the palm of your hand. Although the feature has its limitations, it is a prime example of how 3D scanning services and technologies are becoming more and more integrated into the lives of the everyday customer.
