Collecting Data With 3D Laser Scanning Services
The data obtained using 3D laser scanning services will be paired with an immersive environment to create a suite of decision-making tools. These tools will range from enterprise resource planning integration to data enhancement, radiation simulation, scenario authoring, and live plant simulation links. The new technology will allow access to confidential data in a centralized location from anywhere in the world.
Nuclear plant operators will pair the immersive simulations with L3Harris’s Orchid IX display technology to offer a realistic virtual environment. The operators will use 3D laser scanning services instead of headsets to create accurate 3D models.
Immersive simulators provide real-world data to help nuclear facilities predict possible outcomes in their specific environments. Facilities can use this knowledge to coordinate tasks to mitigate radiation risks, enhance safety, and save money and time.

Through 3D scanning, L3Harris and Duke Energy One were able to build customized virtual spaces that mimic an actual power plant. By providing nuclear operators with access to a lifelike layout of the facility, it is faster and easier to develop plants to enhance cost-effectiveness, efficiency, reliability, and safety in nuclear power plants.
The 3D scanning services technology is the first of its kind and provides a unique capability for nuclear facility operators to understand how their facilities operate in real time. The simulations can be used to support a variety of decision-making processes, including operations, maintenance, and emergency response.
It is based on combining two powerful software platforms: Duke Energy One’s Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and L3Harris Technologies’ High Fidelity Multi-physics (HiFiM) platform. RTDS is a real-time digital simulator that can be used to simulate the operation of nuclear power plants.
HiFiM, on the other hand, is a high-fidelity multi-physics platform that can simulate the behavior of materials under various conditions. Together, these two platforms provide a powerful 3D scanning tool for understanding the behavior of nuclear facilities.
