Award Winners Employ 3D Laser Scanning Services

Example: Outdated CocoWalk Gets 21st Century Upgrade

The 2021 Structure Awards winners and honorees are using innovative techniques in their construction projects. For example, the award winner employs 3D laser scanning services to complete their Miami, Florida, project.

How 3D Laser Scanning Services Are Being Used

The CocoWalk development project is receiving a significant upgrade that brings mixed-use development into the 21st century. The 804,000 sq. ft. project includes shopping, dining, entertainment, and working projects slated for completion in two stages.

The first phase deals with the existing retail façade on the building’s southside. The project goal is to complement the new five-story building on the property’s north-facing side.

The project plans are in the 2D format before being transferred into a 3D model using 3D scanning services. The added dimension allows the team to create improved solutions missed in 2D images. Project managers are also employing 3D scanning services to create a digital model of existing floor conditions allowing architects to recreate some elements and improve others.

Using a 3D laser scan during the project allows the CocoWalk shopping plaza to remain open. Workers can correct and mitigate problems with the 3D models before entering the field.

Structural Award finalists include the Aquatic Complex and VSE Aviation Services Expansion at Miramar Park of Commerce.

Finalists did not use 3D scanning services to renovate the Aquatic Complex. 3D scanning services also were not used during the Miramar Park of Commerce expansion project.
